Custom Tile Commissions
When collaborating with architects and interior designers on custom tile projects, concept development is thoughtfully tailored to the building site as well as the client’s needs, preferences and overall design vision. Each project begins with an in-depth design phase where multiple concepts are explored using 3D modeling software. These digitally rendered tiles can be exported in a compatible file format for seamless integration into architectural plans and design documentation.
Once a final concept is selected, revisions are made as needed until the design is approved for hand modeling and mold making, followed by hand pressing, careful drying and kiln firing to the highest quality standards. Glazing requires a second firing, while any overglaze applications require a third to achieve the desired finish. Due to the inherent variation of handmade tiles, each piece is unique—professional installation by a specialist experienced with handcrafted artisan tile is strongly recommended.
Throughout the process, images of work in progress are shared with the client at predetermined milestones to ensure transparency, alignment with expectations and adherence to the project timeline. Due to the labor-intensive process, mold and tile drying times, as well as multiple firings, tile commissions generally require eight to twelve weeks to complete. A 50% deposit is required to begin work with the balance due upon tile delivery.
Designs often originate in 3D modeling software. Revisions can be explored at this stage and rendered for a realistic view of a tile layout prior to fabrication.
